Product of the Year
Holiday Tissue Canisters
For: Kimberly-Clark Corp.
By: Graphic Packaging International (GPI)
The sidewall structure of this three-piece formed canister consists of UV coating and inks, metallized PET (mPET), 0.016” solid bleached sulfate, and extruded low-density polyethylene. A proprietary process creates a lens pattern on the mPET, making the “ornaments” look three-dimensional as if embossed. Registration marks ensure lens pattern alignment with the graphics.

Red Baron Fire Baked Pizza Singles
For: Schwan’s Consumer Brands
By: Graphic Packaging International (GPI)
PET Film Supplier: Toray Plastics (America) Inc.
Metallizer: Rol-Vac LP
Overprint varnish, ink, SBS, patterned adhesive, paper, adhesive, and mPET are converted to create a functional susceptor patch lamination that eliminates warping of the front panel when it is exposed to repeated freeze/thaw cycles. The innovation extends package shelf life six months, presents a more appealing package, and enables more even cooking.

Cadbury Stand-Up Pouch
For: Cadbury India Ltd
By: Uflex Ltd. (India)
PET, mPET, and polyethylene form a stand-up pouch for chocolates. Plasma metallization enhances the lamination’s barrier properties. Added convenience is provided by a punched hole for hanging display and a press-to-close zipper.

Elvis 75th Anniversary DVD Collection
For: Warner Home Video
By: Hazen Paper Co.
The slip case wrap consists of 60-gauge custom holographic mPET laminated to 80-lb, coated-one-side litho/label paper from Hazen. A two- and three-dimensional Holo-Lens insert adds a security feature, and the custom hologram conveys brand integrity and pizzazz. The litho/label stock exhibits excellent lie-flat and stay-flat characteristics to support faster printing and diecutting speeds.

Rose Among Thorns Insert
For: Hazen Promotion
By: Hazen Paper Co.
The 10-pt, coated-two-side paper features a custom, transfer-metallized hologram overprinted in four-color process plus opaque white. A UV coating protects the front and back of the page. Transfer metallizing helps the relatively lightweight insert to lie flat because it permits moisture gain and loss on both sides of the sheet.

Tecate Beer Floor Advertisements
For: Heineken USA
By: FLEXcon Co. Inc.
Metallizer: Dunmore Corp.
Converting: Performance Printing
The base film of the floor display, a 4-mil, metallized silver, pressure-sensitive polyester/vinyl laminate, generates a more reflective appearance than the previous structure, which relied on screen-printed faux metallic ink. The pressure-sensitive adhesive removes cleanly for up to 180 days after installation. The four-color graphics are protected by a clear gloss vinyl overlaminate.

Cel-Met and O2 Barrier Metallized Sealants
By: Celplast Metallized Products Ltd.
Cel-Met and O2 Barrier metallized sealants permit downgauging of approximately 25% without compromising the barrier properties or performance of the barrier laminate. Both sealants reduce three-ply structures to two plies while providing high barrier properties. Eliminating the need for a second pass in the lamination process also conserves adhesive and reduces energy requirements.
Sustainability Award
Tiger-Max Roller Covering
By: Menges Roller Co.
This thermoplastic urethane roller covering is a recyclable replacement for the rubber traditionally found on rollers that move flexible material through converting and packaging machines. Besides recyclability, the elastomeric covering also offers excellent chemical resistance, superior load-bearing, and better cut and abrasion resistance.

Liner Recovery Program
By: Mitsubishi Polyester Film
This closed-loop recovery and recycling system increases recycling of silicone-treated polyester liner material used as a carrier for pressure-sensitive labels. The process produces Reprocess™ Sustainable Liners with recycled content and diverts spent liner material from landfills and export. The system is expected to recover several million pounds of spent liner material the first year.
