The DuPont Awards for Packaging Innovation is the industry’s longest-running independently judged global awards program honoring packaging materials, processes, technology, and service innovations. The 23rd DuPont Awards were determined to demonstrate excellence in innovation, sustainability, and cost/waste reduction.

Diamond Winner
EcoCradle
By: Ecovative Design (U.S.)
Innovation: Natural Solutions and Bio-Adaptation Thinking Yield Triple Bottom-Line Solutions
Ecovative looked to nature and found an innovative, cost-effective, all-natural solution for protective secondary packaging used for electronics. EcoCradle is a cost-effective and sustainable replacement for Styrofoam or similar materials, is composed completely from ultra-rapid renewable resources (mycelium mushroom “roots” and regionally sourced agricultural byproducts), and is home compostable.

Diamond Winner
Gillette Fusion ProGlide
By: The Procter & Gamble Company, Be Green Packaging (U.S.)
Innovation: New Packaging Structure Enhances Consumer Convenience and Improves Sustainability
Gillette Fusion ProGlide moved from a clamshell to a formable pulp tray made of renewable bamboo and bulrush fiber-based material. The package pushes the boundaries of pulp trays to reducing cost and material weight substantially. It’s popular with consumers because it’s much easier to open and the graphics reinforce the brand identity.

Gold Winner
Agribusiness Virtuous Cycle
By: Cimplast Embalagens and Cimflex (Brazil)
Innovation: : Full Cycle Recycling System Transforms Spent Plastic Agricultural Contianers into High-Value Plastic Products
The Virtuous Cycle is a complete cycle approach that enables used multilayer agrochemical containers to be diverted from landfills and remade into high-value products. A polymer compatibilizer, DuPont Fusa-bond, makes it possible to reuse this mixed-material waste stream for products like rigid or flexible corrugated pipes and automotive lubricant bottles.

Gold Winner
Katan-Ex Microlayer
Film By: Apeldoorn Flexible Packaging (The Netherlands), Cloeren Inc. (U.S.)
Innovation: Microlayer Technology in Stretch Film Reduces Packaging Weight While Improving Product Protection During Transport
Technology aided the design of this stretch film with optimal properties for the beverage industry. The Katan-Ex microlayer film excels in increasing pallet stability at elevated temperatures, uses 30% less material per pallet, and reduces product damage during transportation by 80%.
