Products and services that can quickly transform designs into sample and prototype packages.
Paper-Based Pack for Liquids
The Xela Pack is a 75% paper constructed, environmentally conscious package used for sample and trial-size applications. The standup package comes in sizes ranging from 5 to 30 mL and is suitable for liquid and viscous products as well as pills, powders, and other granulated products.
Mutoh’s ValueJet 1608HS hybrid printer can quickly print prototypes using almost any rigid substrate, while still being able to print on roll-to-roll media. The printer now runs on Mutoh’s all new MP Ink, which is made of 60% bio-based ink.
Digital Cutting Table
The fully modular Zund G3 Sample Maker provides digital cutting for prototypes or full production runs. The cutting table is available in 10 sizes and works with a range of cutting tools.
Prototype Package Printer/Cutter
The Mimaki CJV30-60 is an integrated print/cut system that automatically produces prototype and sample packages. It prints in vibrant color then contour-cuts shapes.
vDesign is Web-based software that produces three-dimensional virtual prototypes of bottles based on customers’ computer-assisted-design samples. The plastic color matching software also enables designers to upload their color and property requirements to generate potential color matches, which can be sorted by cost and other design criteria.
This package is an example of McDowell Label’s HDUV 4.0 combination printing technology, which can be used for both high-volume and prototype packaging. The featured package was printed on a white, micro-voided shrinkable film, which the company says is one of the most sustainable packaging films available for shrink sleeves. This film is naturally opaque, provides UV protection, features a 70% shrink curve, and has a “soft-touch” feel.
Ink for Prototype Printers
Roland’s new ECO-UV S ink is offered in CMYK and white for wide-format VersaUV inkjet devices, including the 64" LEJ-640 printer and 54"and 30" LEC series printer/cutters. ECO-UV S expands up to 220%, allowing graphics to stretch around uneven shapes, indentations, corners, and curved surfaces for complex packaging prototypes.
Label Technology Services
Research and development services from WS Packaging can help designers effectively test and prototype active packaging concepts. Arm & Hammer used the services to develop a replacement indicator for its new FridgeFresh Refrigerator Air Filter. The label uses a chemical reaction between two microencapsulated proprietary materials to signal when it’s time to replace the air filter.
Metallic Effects for Prototypes
Color-Logic’s Process Metallic Color System for HP Indigo enables designers to create metallic highlights and effects on small quantities of labels and packaging. The metallic effects are created when the Indigo press uses its white ink capabilities on metallic substrates.
