Inspiring and creative in-store activation tactics and campaigns received Design of the Times awards, during the Shopper Marketing Expo, October 2011, at Navy Pier in Chicago. Gold, silver and bronze awards are distributed throughout eight channels based upon the entry’s ability to command attention, connect with the shopper, convey information and close the sale. A platinum award for Best of the Times honors is given to the top scoring entry of all gold award recipients within each channel.

Great Northern Corporation, a designer and manufacturer of consumer packaging and in-store displays, won nine Design of the Times awards, from bronze to platinum.

Taking both gold and platinum awards in the Convenience Stores and Specialty Stores channels were the displays made for PepsiCo and 3M, respectively.

The PepsiCo’s Mountain Dew Cooler Door Oversize Bottle display is a large graphic replication of a bottle that used untapped real estate to draw attention to the brand. The 3M display shipper for its new apple-shaped Post-It note dispensers has an attention-grabbing header and the waterfall layering shelves that allowed the product to be shopped easily.

Great Northern also won two silver awards for

  • the coded end cap it designed for Lexmark International Inc. to help launch a new printer at Best Buy. Each color differentiated product selling points and the interactive header mirrored Lexmark’s TV advertising.
  • the 3M Scotch Blue Tape NASCAR QTR Pallet. The quarter pallet display to raise awareness of the 3M/Sherwin Williams-sponsored car running during the 2010 Kansas NASCAR race and drive sales of three different 3M products.

Three bronze awards also were earned in the Consumer Electronics, Drug, and Specialty Stores channels for PoP projects display Verizon Wireless, and Mattel Cars toys and a die-cut floor sign supporting the Disney-Pixar Cars 2 movie.
