World Packaging Organisation WorldStar Awards 2014-2015

The World Packaging Organisation is a nonprofit, nongovernmental, international federation of national packaging institutes and associations, regional packaging federations and other interested parties including corporations and trade associations. WorldStar Awards are presented only to those packages which, having already won recognition in a national competition, are compared by an expert panel of judges to similar packages from around the world. Awards are based on the judges' consensus that a package is superior in its own right, and better in its class in execution or innovation by comparison.

The conventional polyethylene layers are substituted by low density polyethylene from a renewable source: sugar cane. As a result, the package uses up to 78 % of renewable materials, contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, through the absorption of CO2 during plant growth. The package has a cap made with bio-based HDPE.

The box does not require gluing, this helps to reduce resources used for the production. The graphics design of the box is divided into 2 layers. The outer layer depicts the exterior of a dumpling with prints of bamboo leaves. As the first layer is “peeled”, messages and images printed on the second layer will be revealed. The leaves are embossed to enhance the appearance.

Through collaboration, a specially designed fitment was created that provides a soft serve appearance when the ice cream is delivered from the pouch. The shaped, spouted pouch is a 2-ply lamination engineered to withstand frozen distribution for home deliveries and is designed for toughness for squeezing a frozen product.

A unique shape and concept for brand differentiation of 500 mL Motor Oil to be sold in forecourts and petrol stations across South Africa. The unique shape of the pack–based on the shape and format of a blood bag–engages the consumer´s interest and lends itself to interesting brand activation through the use of point of sale and other unique promotional materials. The packaging concept should evoke a sense of importance and vitality – what blood is to the body, oil is to the car. It is proposed that pump attendants would wear white lab coats and the oil bags be dispensed from typical IV stands in order to extend this brand concept further.
