DESIGNS: Crown and Delacre Design a Striking Tin for Chocolate BiscuitsDelacre, one of United Biscuits' leading confectionery brands, recently launched a promotional Spiderman tin for its Délichoc brand in France. Developed in cooperation with CROWN Speciality Packaging, a business unit of Crown Holdings Inc., the biscuit tins were part of an exclusive and successful promotion for Carrefour supermarkets in France.
"Crown's highly graphical tin marks a distinct departure from our traditional biscuit packaging," says Annabelle Millet, United Biscuits representative. "We wanted to offer our target audience—families with children—a fun, delicious and reusable keepsake to remind them of their favorite superhero. We're thrilled with the success."
The tin was decorated using high-quality lithography. To further tie it to the film, the graphic tin features a removable lid that shows Spiderman and the movie name in France and Belgium, along with its summer release date in France.
"This is a really great package that associates the Delacre brand with something fun and exciting," adds François-Xavier Vannini, marketing executive at Crown Speciality Packaging. "Quality printing of the vivid color graphics was an essential element to the success of the design."
Mountain Valley and Flowdesign Translate Glass Bottle into PlasticAfter the launch of the redesigned brand label and glass bottle, Mountain Valley once again teamed up with Flowdesign of Detroit, MI, to redesign their plastic bottle line. "Our goal for this project was to combine the redesigned label of the glass bottle, but add a contemporary flair to the plastic bottle shape," says Dan Matauch, principal of Flowdesign.
The new bottle shape incorporates the "Since 1871" from the glass bottles two times around the shoulder below a wavy embossed mountain scene. The label is a clear wrap that embodies the look and feel of the glass bottle line. The Mountain Valley red oval icon was designed very large on the front panel to help with brand awareness and shelf impact.

STRUCTURE: 4sight Leverages Its Innovative Pepsi Global Package Structure in U.S.Pepsi has partnered with 4sight inc., a NYC-based leader in structural package innovation, to help build brand equity through packaging structure across Pepsi soft drinks in the U.S. The result is an exciting, new 20-oz. bottle for the U.S. market, which echoes the successful design 4sight recently created for Pepsi International.
"Manifesting brand essence through packaging is powerful at retail," says Ron Pence, Pepsi's senior marketing manager for packaging innovation. Using a distinctive, dynamic bottle structure conveying Pepsi's image of youth and vitality, the company is striving to stay relevant to teens and young adults.
"Wherever you look, there is branding in all directions," notes Stuart Leslie, president of 4sight inc. "No matter which way the bottle faces, consumers will see two Pepsi globes embossed on top above the label and the Pepsi name prominently displayed in two areas at the bottom."
Until now, the branding was only displayed on the label. By integrating the Pepsi globe and name directly onto the bottle, the new proprietary packaging communicates Pepsi's personality. Other design details include the lines of the iconic globe logo as horizontal waves sculpted into the plastic bottle. By sculpting the swirls in a horizontal format that run around the bottle, they are able to better reflect light adding sparkle and effervescence. "This feature also helps to maintain the integrity of the bottle throughout its shelf life," Leslie points out.
Not only did the structural team make sure that the bottles would withstand carbonation pressure but also that the design elements retained their shape and sharpness without distortion over time. Because the bottle structure adhered to Pepsi's existing manufacturing standards, it allowed for a smooth transition at plants across the country.
