Field of Dreams

Dear Readers,

Ah, the rites of spring have started to pop up all over the place. One of the clearest signs that spring is upon us is the gathering of professional baseball teams at their spring training facilities. This year is already abuzz with controversy, as steroids have taken center stage. Although we don’t have any controversy within the pages of this issue of Package Design Magazine, we do have a powerful editorial lineup that covers all the bases.

Leading off this issue is Editorial Director Patrick Henry’s insightful profile on General Mills and the their extraordinary internal design team. On deck and batting second is Heather Neese’s feature on the many applications of paperboard packaging. Batting third is an in-depth profile by M. Grace Maselli on Great Western Industries, a leading consumer packaging manufacturer and printer. In the cleanup spot is an exciting look at a proven veteran, a story about the rebirth of the venerable Westinghouse brand.

If all that power at the top of our lineup isn’t enough, this issue has plenty of depth in the rest of the order. You won’t want to miss our regular array of product spotlights on some of today’s most innovative packaging, as well as pieces on two of the year’s biggest events — drupa 2004 and Pack Expo 2004. Finally, batting ninth and pitching a brilliant story is David Luttenberger’s “Wow, What a Package,” featuring a look at the unique packages for bottled water.

We’re confident that the lineup we’ve assembled will prove to be a big hit with you, our readers. Hopefully you enjoy reading it as much as we have enjoyed putting it together.

Enjoy and “Play Ball!”
