When the Package is King

The internet is changing forever how we shop for music and videos. Today we are downloading music; tomorrow we may be downloading movies. When the package is no longer necessary, the package must stand on its own and have a value all its own. Today's package designers are rising to the challenge to create collectable packages, often with bonus features and booklets.

Our cover story goes inside the thought processes of the Los Angeles-based Shout! Factory, a growing firm specializing in reissuing pop music on CDs and television series on DVD. These packages speak to fans of the genre directly, but consumers often buy on faith that the extra money of the package is worth their hard-earned money. Shout! has carefully built a quick reputation for delivering value in their packages.

The entertainment theme of this issue continues with perspectives on licensing of entertainment icons in our Front Panel, a profile of the designers who garnered Grammy Awards for music packaging, and a Spotlight on the package redesign of Snak King Popcorn bags.

In our Designer's Corner column, we'll learn how to grab kids' attention and learn that even complicated messages can be conveyed visually. Other features include a global perspective on the fascinating Korean culture and how they respond to Western brands. A special Spotlight examines the competitive premium chocolate market and how premium packaging can distinguish high-end brands.

So, pull up a chair and prepare for some entertainment packaging fun.

Enjoy!
