World Packaging Organization

WorldStar Awards

The World Packaging Organization is a not for profit, non-governmental, international federation of national packaging institutes, regional packaging federations and other interested parties including individuals, corporations, and trade associations. Founded 1968 in Tokyo by visionary leaders from the global packaging community, the mission of the organization is: to encourage the development of packaging technology, science, access and engineering; to contribute to the development of international trade; and to stimulate education and training in packaging. The WorldStar Awards are only open to packages that have won recognition from major national competitions.

President's Award
SIKA Mix & Go Kit
Wipf AG (Switzerland)

This patented stand-up pouch is filled with dry mortar, has a screw cap, and is secured with a membrane. By adding water, reclosing the cap, and kneading the contents, the mix is transformed into a homogenous mass. After tearing open the pouch along a lasered line, the package forms an open-ended container with ready-to-use mortar, and the consumer uses an enclosed scraper/spreader to apply the product.

President's Nominee
Vizir Sleever International (France)

Procter & Gamble wanted to differentiate its dishwashing liquids, but decoration of both a curvy bottle and jug handle at the same time was not previously possible. Sleever's new PET formulations specially developed for shrink sleeving with steam shrink application are able to offer excellent fitting around these shaped containers. A special pre-cut into the sleeve accommodates the jug handle.

President's Nominee
combiCut
SIG allCap AG (Switzerland)

This invention provides the world's first single-action closure able to actually cut through a fully intact carton by mimicking the action of a traditional tin can opener. There is no longer a need to perform carton pre-application preparations.

President's Nominee
iCon with ConTracer
Bonar Plastics B.V. (The Netherlands)

This technology provides an intelligent container with wireless asset monitoring in a heavy-duty, UN-approved 1,000-liter container for chemicals. The outer container is a sandwich construction of polyethylene that provides impact resistance, spill containment, and recyclability. The ConTracer is a wireless monitoring system which provides information on the location and content level of the container as well as histories of the customer, container, and maintenance.

WorldStar Awards: Special Focus Turkey

To complement the Global Trendsetters article on packaging trends in Turkey (page 34), here are four Turkish packages that won WorldStar Awards this year in the Food and Beverage categories. See more on the WorldStar Awards and the World Packaging Organization on page 54.

Nestle Torchin Ketchup
Alcan Packaging Rotopak A.S. (Turkey)

The structure of this package is designed with the appropriate material, taking the features of ketchup into consideration. This spouted standup pouch is formed out of 12 mic PET/8 mic aluminum/100 mic PE film. The package features vibrant, appetizing illustrations of food that go well with ketchup to emphasize the appeal of the product.

Yoplait Fruit Yogurt
Pinar Dairy Products Inc. (Turkey)

This package has a polypropylene cup and aluminum cover that protects the product for long shelf life. The PVC lid is rotogravure printed with nine colors. To provide attraction on the shelf, yogurt and fruit are shown combining in a delicious picture on the attractive red background.

Partitioned Fruit Yogurt Bowl
Yörsan Gida Mam.San.Tic. AS. (Turkey)

The dull white, polystyrene bowl allows no interaction with the fruit or yogurt. The overall shape is square, but it has two different sections; the smaller section has the fruit mixture and the larger section contains the yogurt. The package is one single piece, and the aluminum lid keeps the ingredients separate before consumption.

Tadim Sunflower Seeds 400gr
Alcan Packaging Rotopak A.S. (Turkey)

This gusseted dried fruit package with Mat OPP film encases the appearance of the package while metallized film provides genuine protection for the dried fruits. The full surface area is used for the product illustration. The colors display the product realistically, and the emphasis of the Tadim logo conveys quality.
