Graphic Designer:
  Polan & Waski, LLC
Structural Designers:
Jones Packaging Inc., Nestlé Ideation Team, One 80 Design

Nestlé Turtles are milk chocolate covered pecans and caramel treats, and the new stand-up format takes advantage of vertical merchandising for increased shelf impact. When the beveled top is removed, the base's side panels expand outward for easy product access, transforming the package into a serving dish. Tamper-evident tabs eliminate the need for a poly overwrap. Polan & Waski took advantage of the fun shape and slide-out panels for added animation. The Turtle banner logo interacts with the package to fortify and enhance the brand identity. The package is SBS paperboard flexo printed in seven colors with in-line UV coating.

Consumer's Voice Winner

Stone Mason Ice Melt and Melt & Grip

Customer:
  U.S.E. Hickson Products Ltd.
Converter/Manufacturer:
  Reaction Plastics Inc.
Structural Designer:
  Compact Design Ltd.

Sponsored by Canadian Packaging magazine, the Consumer's Voice award recognizes the entry that best addresses current consumer packaging preferences. The unique upside-down bottle catches the consumer's attention at first glance. Converted and manufactured by Reaction Plastics Inc., the innovative "top handle" design with "spreader" cap assembly makes it easy for the consumer to use during those slippery winter days. HDPE and PP were used as both fit within existing recycling programs.

Design Exchange (DX) Winner

Sleeman Fine Porter

Customer:
Sleeman Brewing and Malting Company Ltd.
Converter/Manufacturer:
  Lithotech (Division of Norampac)
Graphic Designer:
  Perennial Inc.
Structural Designer:
  Lithotech

The design draws upon a strong combination of color, typography, embossing, and placement of John Sleeman's signature to convey an upscale beer—while creating a package that is both trendy and timeless. The package was inspired by Scotch whiskey bottles for consumers with discerning tastes, and the neutral tone is reminiscent of craft paper used to package goods ages ago. The corrugated carton is debossed and printed using offset lithography and flexography. The hand-applied decal on top of case creates a sealing device that must be broken before consumers can begin the experience. The simulated labels, ingredient listings, and tasting notes emphasize the hand-made quality and superior craftsmanship of the beer, and print on the back of the label is unveiled as the beer is consumed.

The packages have easy-to-read text, organized product information, clear and concise cooking instructions, and accessible nutrition information. The packages are also easy to open, sturdy, and appropriate for single- or two-person servings.
