Nestlé Turtles Package
For: Nestlé Canada

The Turtles package replaces a traditional two-piece carton and eliminates the tray and overwrap while increasing manufacturing output and providing a tamper-evident closure tab. SBS boxboard allowed the best functionality, connoted an impression of freshness, and presented the best graphic reproduction with eight-color taint-free flexo inks plus high gloss UV coating. The high gloss, window, and attractive design emphasize premium quality, and the box can stand up for increased visibility or stack for floor displays. Also a winner in the Innovation - Structure category.

Electronic Hard Case

To see these cartons in action, check out the cover of this issue. The Electronic Hard Case is an interactive package that has a touch-pad-activated, programmed word-lighting display. Developed for marketing purposes at airport duty-free shops, the package's novelty may last into consumers' homes as the package was designed for repeat or secondary use. The Coated Natural Kraft creates a very stiff and durable package from a structure that is essentially a set-up box. The lid and back panel also have magnetic inserts for secure closing.

This unique seven-pack (marked one for each day of the week) enhances product identity with novelty and a proprietary trapezoidal handle. The handle nests between the bottles and telescopes upward when the consumer lifts it, keeping the consumer's knuckles away from the crimped bottle caps. The package contains glass bottles and weighs almost 10 pounds, so Coated Natural Kraft was chosen for strength purposes.

The goal was to design a better handle on a carton with an overall reduced cost. The sturdier, proprietary handle design uses board which was previously scrapped. A KraftPak insert provides an additional ply of board within the handle and it spans the top panel, which in turn protects against the chiming of the bottles and provides a torsional stiffness to the package. Also a winner in the Innovation—Structure category.

Soccer Bandoleer

The paperboard wraps around a soccer ball and celebrates the World Cup and Brazil. This fun promotional package needed good tear resistance to go with a good print surface, and the package is assembled from two pieces to maximize the print/cut efficiency. The unique shape, graphics, and soccer ball contribute to the uniqueness of this package, which at retail is encased in clear shrink film.

This DVD is crossover product for loyal fans, so the package had to give the end-user a reason to purchase the special edition. The music company wanted to convey an old-style hymnal book with embossing, so the chosen material was aged, pre-debossed stock with a leather look. The package features Fibermark's Hylex #7 Firenze material printed with first-pass silver foil stamp and second pass four-color process.

This package with intricate die-cuts uses laser technology and specialty coatings to achieve its strong shelf impact. Three PMS colors with specialty intrigue coating give the essence of each fragrance, and the laser cut sleeve draws consumers attention to the elegant foil stamp that reveals the brand name. The internal filler is also made out of micro flute.

Mary Kay® Affection!" Evolution!" Box

Mary Kay wanted this carton's lid to have an integrated gift card and the carton's interior to be printed and gloss-coated to have the same finished appearance as the exterior carton. MeadWestvaco's Printkote® SBS was used for both the outside and stiffener of this package. The Evolution Box is a uniquely scored and glued two-piece construction, providing the look and feel of a high-quality set-up box.

Nighthawk

This corrugated paperboard package provides the Nighthawk head lamps good product protection and package stability without an insert. The packaging graphics attract the retail consumer in the new auto parts store environment, and large easy-to-read part numbers help the consumer get the right lamp. Holographic foil stamping reflects and illuminates store lights, and the Nighthawk image is die cut onto the front panel window cutout.

The Coach Gift Box program provided a challenge to provide a cost-competitive U.S. manufactured box with the sheet sizes as large as 47-1/2" x 37-1/8" and critical registration and reverse out requirements. The key to success was providing a coated two-sided board substrate that would create a high gloss interior finish, and the final designs were produced using inline flexographic presses with UV coating.

Crabtree & Evelyn venture into a new category with quiet and calming fragrances with packages that are crisp, subtle, and simply elegant. The light gray, two passes of hot stamping, and soft aqueous coating invoke a nice relaxed feel that is pleasing to the eye and to the touch. The carton is made of a very smooth SBS that prints nicely and stamps beautifully.

In order to break into the gourmet taffies market, Sweet's Candies and Utah Paper Box created a unique structure worthy of a joint patent. This one-pass solution mimics the product in look and feel, as well as providing clean, eye-popping graphics for a cosmetic grade feel. It features one spot color on the inside, flexo silver, five dry trap sport colors, effects varnish, and UV end cure.

Winged Pour Spout

This innovation is an environmentally friendly package that eliminates the need for a metal pour spout and tamper-evident label by integrating these features into the construction. The new package helped increase run speeds on existing equipment while allowing the packages to be case-packed and handled in the existing warehouse. In addition, the new paperboard substitute features were both able to have instructions printed right on them for ease of operation.

Nautica Voyage Specialty Tube

This unique eye-catching 2-pak structure mimics the shape of a bottle with a unique manufacturing process. The multilayer tube package has strength and durability while maximizing the graphic display area. Precision die-cutting of the printed sheets is required for proper forming of the finished product. Multipass gluing and compound folds are required to form the tube and lid into their final shapes.

Vicious Fishing Ultimate

JBS wanted a carton that would increase the output of the filling process, increase the water resistance of the package, extend the use of the carton through the product's lifecycle, and improve the graphic presentation. A grommet and line cutter required a thicker substrate to ensure these features would remain intact during use, and spot colors replaced process colors to increase the vibrancy of the package colors.
