Superfos Optimizes Plastic Packaging
To Be a Leader in Green Innovations

The Danish company Superfos has made sustainability an integral part of their values and visions, successfully reducing the consumption of both resources and energy in production and constantly increasing recycling capabilities. Superfos focuses on green innovations within weight reduction, new materials, and optimized use of packaging.

The Remia line of sauces, for example, caters to the modern consumer. "This solution is friendly to the eye, the touch, and the environment," says R&D technology director Benny Nielsen. "By creating a strong visual identity and functional features, every piece of packaging has become a small piece of functional art. Moreover, the packs are thinner and lighter and thus consume fewer raw materials."

Superfos is investigating the consequences on product and packaging performances such as tightness, barriers, heat resistance, etc. "We are committed to the continuous development of lighter and thinner packaging, which benefits the environment during production, transportation and disposal, " says Nielsen. By reaching a very low oxygen transmission rate, Superfos is working on offering injection-molded plastic solutions for products formerly in traditional packaging of glass and metal.

In another example, Superfos achieved great savings in raw materials while still meeting the customer needs when reducing packaging volume on a 1200-ml pot. "By reducing the weight on this specific pot using fewer raw materials in production, we will save almost 54 tons of raw materials per year, " says Nielsen. "Furthermore, as the modified pot has the same diameter as the old one, customers can use the same production equipment and filling lines. "
