“After ten years and some disastrous results it is time to take decisive action.” This statement was made in form KLZH to the EU.
These forthright demands and harsh criticisms stem from the disregard shown by many economic sectors for the relevant requirements of Regulation (EU) 10/2011 and the recent amendments to Regulation 882/2004. Those concerned are primarily closure manufacturers, fillers, food manufacturers and retailers.
This was established again in a Europe-wide investigation of adherence to the defined migration limits in glass jars with oily contents. Only a small fraction of the products investigated turned out to conform to the rules. The majority exceeded the limits considerably. It was found that ESBO, PAD, ATBC, DBS, DINCH, ARMG and acPG had migrated out of the lid seal into the contents. The mandatory documentation on the plasticizers used and their composition also revealed considerable flaws and omissions and even incorrect entries.
In this connection the following statement was made: “It cannot be permitted that a majority of those responsible for food safety demonstrate such clear defiance of explicit regulations.” Something must be done to force those who are responsible for food safety to rethink and take action. The speaker felt that incentives should be created to persuade the companies responsible to increase safety. However the fines mentioned above could also be considered. They would be payable by those who acquire money unlawfully with products that do not conform to the regulations. When imposing these fines it was felt that these should be scaled with regard to sales throughout the EU because a breach of the rules affects all consumers in the EU.
Perhaps demands like these will shake the responsible people in the food industry awake. There has long been a need for action. The solution is available too. PROVALIN from Actega DS is an innovative sealant that is free of PVC, phthalates and other plasticizers perceived to give cause for concern. It has been used since 2011 by some of those responsible for closure manufacture, filling and food production. The PROVALIN family caters for all types of contents, filling processes and closure processes. It offers maximum, tested food safety and enables all those involved and responsible along the food chain to comply with EU regulations, which is proofed by long-term studies and migration testings.
